Office Christmas party games everyone can join
The easiest office Christmas party games are ones people play on their own phone, with nothing to install and nobody put on the spot. Punchline is a free meme caption game that works exactly like that: one link or QR code, up to 16 players a room, about 15 minutes a game, and a Safe memes only setting for work.

What makes a good game for the office party?
- Nobody on the spot. Captions are shown without names, so people vote for the joke, not the job title. The quiet one in accounts wins more often than you’d think.
- Works in the room and on a call. Hybrid teams can play together: people in the office scan a QR code, people at home click the link.
- Quick to explain. Write a caption, vote on everyone’s, most points wins. That’s the whole briefing.
- Nothing to sign up for. No accounts, no work email addresses, no app for IT to approve. A name and a link is all it takes.
- Work-safe. A switch that keeps the memes to a gentler set, so the game itself never causes a meeting with HR.
How to run it at the party
- Whoever’s hosting opens punchline.party on their phone or laptop, picks a name and presses start.
- In the lobby, tick Safe memes only. It’s worth doing for any work game.
- Colleagues in the room point their phone camera at the QR code in the lobby. Anyone at home gets the invite link in the meeting or team chat.
- Want it on the big screen? Open the invite link on the laptop plugged into the TV or projector and choose Just watch and vote. The room then sees every meme land at once.
- Play three to five rounds. Everyone captions a random meme, the memes are revealed one at a time without names, and everyone votes.
- The round winners face off in the Ultimate Punchline, one last vote for the best meme of the party. The winner gets a front page of their own, which is ready to share in the team chat.
A plan for the afternoon
- While people arrive: a quick warm-up of 3 rounds with a 60-second caption timer.
- The main game: 5 rounds with the default timer, which takes about 15 minutes.
- The grand final: if you ran a few rooms at once, put each room’s winner into one last game.
Bigger teams
Each room holds 16 players. For a bigger office, split by team or by table, give each group its own room code, and compare winners at the end. Anyone who’d rather not write captions can join a private room as the audience instead: up to 50 people can watch and vote on every meme without playing.
Keeping it work-friendly
With Safe memes only ticked, the game sticks to a gentler set of templates. The darker Unhinged memes are off by default anyway, and pornographic templates never get into the game at all. There are no adverts, so nothing unexpected pops up on the big screen either. The captions are written by your colleagues, so the rest is down to them.
Not everyone in the office?
If half the team is working from home, the same game works on Teams, Zoom or Google Meet. There’s more on that in the team icebreaker guide and the guide to video call games.
Questions
What is a good game for an office Christmas party?
A game everyone can join on their own phone, with no sign-up and short rounds. Punchline is a free meme caption game that fits: one link or QR code, up to 16 players a room, about 15 minutes a game, and a Safe memes only setting for work.
Is Punchline suitable for work?
Yes, with the host’s Safe memes only switch turned on. Darker templates are off by default, there are no ads, and nobody needs an account.
Can remote colleagues join an office party game?
Yes. People in the room scan the QR code, and people at home open the invite link. Punchline runs in the browser alongside Teams, Zoom or Google Meet.
How many people can play?
Up to 16 players in one room, plus up to 50 more watching and voting as the audience. For a bigger office, run a few rooms at once.
How long does a game take?
Around 15 minutes with the default five rounds. Three rounds with a 60-second timer makes a quicker warm-up.
Does it cost anything?
No. Punchline is free with no ads and nothing to buy.
