Meme games to play with friends online
The best online meme games are free, run in the browser and let everyone play on their own phone. Here’s how they work, what to look for, and how to get one going with your friends in under a minute.

What is an online meme game?
Most meme games are caption games. Everyone is dealt a meme template, writes the funniest caption they can against a timer, and then the group judges the results. It is the old ‘caption this’ game from the group chat, turned into something with rules, rounds and a winner.
Some meme games work differently: you guess which meme is being described, or match a caption to a picture. Writing your own captions tends to get the biggest laughs, because every joke is one your friends have never heard before.
What makes a good meme game to play with friends?
- Everyone on their own device. One link, and each person plays on a phone, tablet or laptop. Nobody squints at a shared screen.
- No accounts and nothing to install. Every sign-up page loses you a friend. A name and a link should be all it takes.
- Anonymous voting. When memes are shown without names, people vote for the joke, not the person. Quiet friends win more often than you’d think.
- A big, fresh meme library. If you see the same ten templates every game, the jokes dry up fast. Look for new templates added regularly.
- Short rounds with a timer. A countdown keeps the pace up and stops one perfectionist holding up the group.
- Works for any group size. Three people on a Tuesday, twelve at a party. A good meme game handles both.
How do you play a meme game with friends online?
- Open punchline.party on any device, pick a name and a character, and press start.
- Send your friends the invite link, or read out the 4-letter room code. If you’re in the same room, they can scan the QR code in the lobby instead.
- As host, choose the rounds, the caption timer and which memes to use, then start the game.
- Everyone captions their meme. Drag the text boxes into place, and reroll if the template isn’t speaking to you.
- Each meme is revealed one at a time, without names. Vote thumbs up, meh or thumbs down, and give your one crown a round to the best.
- Most points after the last round wins. The winning memes from every round then go head to head in the Ultimate Punchline, one final vote for the best meme of the night.
A game takes around 15 minutes with the default settings. The full rules and scoring are on the how to play page.
Playing apart or in the same room
Online meme games work just as well whether your friends are scattered across the country or squashed onto one sofa. Apart, keep a video or voice call going alongside, because the reactions are half the fun. There’s a guide to video call games if you’re hosting one. Together, everyone plays on their own phone and the reveal turns into a room full of people reading out captions.
What if your friends aren’t around?
It happens. Punchline has two ways to play without a group. Play with strangers (in beta) drops you into a public game with 3 to 8 other players. Play against Punchline starts a private game against one to five computer players, who look at the meme they’re dealt and write their own captions. They’re a good way to learn the game before you inflict it on your friends. They also learn from the thumbs up real players give their captions, so their jokes get better over time, and they never see anything you write.
Why Punchline?
I made Punchline because my own group’s game nights kept fizzling out, and I wanted a meme game that was quick to start and nice to look at. It has:
- No ads, ever. It’s kept running by players who choose to chip in.
- Over a thousand meme templates, from all-time classics to this week’s trending memes, TV and film moments and animated GIFs, with new ones added every week.
- 2 to 16 players a room, plus an audience who can watch and vote without playing.
- Caption lettering, so a joke can be in classic meme type, marker, typewriter or bubble letters.
- End-of-game stats and a front page for the winner that you can share in the group chat.
