Punchline: the free online meme game to play with friends

Punchline is a meme caption party game you play in the browser: on a video call, on Discord or in the same room. Everyone gets a random meme template, writes the funniest caption they can, then the group votes on every one. No ads, no sign-up, nothing to download, and it’s made with its players. Just you, your friends and a lot of questionable captions.

No ads. Ever.

Questions

Is Punchline free?

Yes. Punchline is completely free to play, with no ads, no sign-up and nothing to download. It is kept running by players who choose to chip in through Buy Me a Coffee.

Are there any ads?

No, and there never will be. Punchline is funded by its community instead, so nothing gets in the way of the memes.

How many people can play?

From 2 to 16 players in a room. It is at its best with 4 to 10 friends, on a video call or in the same room.

Can I play Punchline on my own?

Yes. Choose 'Play against Punchline' on the home page and pick up to five computer players. They look at the meme they are dealt, write their own captions (often about what people are talking about that day) and vote alongside you.

Can I play with strangers online?

Yes. 'Play with strangers' (in beta) puts you in a public game with other players, 3 to 8 per room, and starts automatically. Public games use standard settings, never include the darker Unhinged memes, remove slurs and links from captions, and let players vote to remove anyone spoiling the game.

What devices does it work on?

Any modern web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Everyone can join from their own device with a link or a 4-letter room code.

How do you play?

Everyone gets a random meme template and writes the funniest caption they can before the timer runs out. Then every meme is shown anonymously and the group votes thumbs up, meh or thumbs down, and hands out Meme King crowns. The most points after the last round wins.

Where do the memes come from?

Punchline has a growing library of over a thousand meme templates, from all-time classics to this week's trending and brand-new templates and animated GIFs. New ones are added every week, and templates players keep skipping are retired.

Can I suggest a feature or a meme?

Please do. Punchline is shaped by the people who play it. Post an idea on the community board and vote for the ones you want most.

Is it safe for work?

By default, yes. Pornographic templates never get in at all. The host of a private game can switch on Unhinged, which mixes in darker and ruder templates alongside the usual ones, but it is off unless someone turns it on and it is never used in public games. Captions are written by players, so it is as tame or as chaotic as your group makes it.
